Mullus surmuletus
Easy to distinguish from the Red mullet by a striped dorsal. It changes colorationfrom the colourful day pattern to a mottled camouflage at night, which is also seen during non-active periods by day. While searching for food the mullets (often progressing along the bottom side by side in a row) stir up clouds of mud or sand, which attract other fishes that pick up morsels from the mullets’ table. Mullets are highly esteemed food fish.
Mediterranean, Black Sea. English Channel to Senegal. Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands.
Depth range: 2–80 m.
