Overview

There are many kinds of abalone, but the largest is the Red Abalone, which can grow to 30cm (12in). The Red Abalone is found on the west coast of North America. Abalones are distinguished by the natural holes formed on the edge of their shell, which they use to expel sea water. Abalones are prized both for their edible meat and for their colorful, iridescent shells, which are used to make jewelry.
