Brown File Fish

The brown filefish lives benthic on the shelf in rocky areas. Most common at the Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde Islands it is easily recognized by diver. The species swims in pairs. In males, the first ray of the dorsal fin is elongated. Colouration may vary depending on the location of the file-fish.

Angola to Morocco, Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, and Mediterranean. Western tropical Islands from New England to Brazil.

Depth range: 5–50 m.
