Streaked Weever

The two common weever species of the Mediterranean Sea are clearly different in colour. The Streaked Weever is less often buried in sand and frequently rests on the sand quite openly. Its sting is as painful as that of the Greater weever. First aid consists in rubbing the wound with potassium permanganate and/or in bathing the wound with as hot as possible.

Mediterranean Sea, Gulf of Cadiz, Spain, south to Angola. Canary Islands.

Depth range: 2–100 m; rests openly on sand, less often buried.
